First debate on uninominal election system gathers about 100 participants in Moldova

Chisinau, 31 March /MOLDPRES/ – The proposal to include the uninominal voting system is subject to public debate. The event involved about 100 visitors, the event was moderated by Speaker Adrian Candu, the parliament's communication and public relations department has reported.
The debate attend the parliament members, representatives of public authorities, political parties in the Parliament, Government, Central Election Commission, Constitutional Court, Academy of Sciences, representatives of civil society, academia, ethnic minorities, journalists, analysts and legal experts of constitutional and political science.
The debate is organized at the initiative of Speaker Andrian Candu.
The disputes will continue next week with a new round of debate. According to an analysis presented at the beginning of the debate, most political parties have or have had in the election program promises to introduce the uninominal system.
The parliamentary initiative on the uninominal voting system was sent for expertise to the Venice Commission. The uninominal vote requires direct election of MPs to Parliament. In such a system, the citizens have a choice between several candidates, and not between multiple party lists.
Moldova already has a uninominal voting system for the election of mayors. Each region of Moldova will have its Members of Parliament, according to the number of inhabitants, by this voting system.
