Chisinau, 7 June /MOLDPRES/- The reforms adopted by Moldova in the energy sector in terms of adjusting the national legislation to the acquis communautaire, as well as the projects for the diversification of the renewable energy sources, were presented by Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Tudor Ulianovschi at a high level event on access to energy and the implementation of the 7th sustainable development goal, held in Geneva, the MAEIE’s press service has reported.

Presenting the projects implemented by the national authorities in the field, the Moldovan official emphasized that as a country dependent on imported energy, Moldova aims to create a competitive and efficient energy sector, offering to all consumers high quality energy resources at affordable prices and which subsequently offer plausible solutions to the domestic consumer, preventing price increases and dependence on energy imports.

“At the same time, the rural sector can have enormous benefits from the proper development of the biofuel industry, as this will ensure the creation of new jobs and sources of income. Expanding the biofuel market in rural communities will also attract new service providers. This will create a multiplier effect that will help rural development, reduce energy poverty and, last but not least, increase the country's energy security and reduce dependence on gas and oil imports,” he said.

United Nations Deputy Secretary- General Amina Mohammed and other high-ranking officials approached the importance of rural development through the strengthening of the biofuel industry and the linking of governmental energy policies to the priorities of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Ulianovschi highly appreciated the financial assistance provided by the European Union to the Republic of Moldova and the United Nations Development Program in implementing the "Energy and Biomass" project, which will allow for the strengthening of our country's energy security and the reduction of dependence on imported energy resources.
