World Press Photo exhibition returns to Chisinau

Chisinau, 21 November /MOLDPRES/ - The World Press Photo 2018 exhibition, described by experts as the most important competition in the world, today was launched at the National History Museum of Moldova the second year in a row.
The event was organized by the Centre for Independent Journalism and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bucharest.
Director of the Advanced School of Journalism Sorina Stafarta has said that this contest annually gives prizes to photographers from all over the world for the best pictures which contributed to the development of the visual journalism. Professional photographers, photo reporters and documentary photographers take part in the competition.
At its 61st issue, the competition brought together about 5,000 photographers from 125 countries, which sent more than 73,000 pictures. The jury awarded 45 photographers from 25 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Romania, the USA, Hungary, etc. The exhibition staged in Chisinau comprises 139 photos, behind which there are life stories of people from the entire world.
Attending the event, Ambassador of the Netherlands Stella Ronner-Grubacic said that these photographs presented stories worth being known by visitors from various countries. At the same time, a representative of the World Press Photo Foundation, Sanne Schim Van Der Loeff, stressed that the contest’s goal was to show stories which matter.
The first issue of World Press Photo took place in 1955, when a group of Dutchmen organized a contest to display works to an international audience. During years, it became one of the most prestigious competitions of photos and visual journalism in the world.
The exhibition will be opened during three weeks.
