New challenges in development of Moldova's regions tackled in southern town

Chisinau, 04 December /MOLDPRES/ – There were discussed the new challenges in development of the regions of Moldova in Cimislia, on Tuesday, 03 December, at a roundtable that aimed to address the provisions in this regard of the Association Agreement of Moldova – EU, Action Plan of the Agreement Moldova – EU and the perspectives of regional development in the context of a new paradigm in the field. The event was organized by the Southern Regional Development Agency (South ADR) in collaboration with the Institute for Regional Economic Development (REDI), under the aegis of a project of the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ).
The REDI consultant, Alexandr Muravschi, spoke about the new paradigm of regional development, provisions of the National Strategy for Regional Development for 2016 – 2020 and importance of administrative – territorial reform. The expert noted that, with the new paradigm of regional development, the focus would be on economic development and smart specialisation.
Analising the perspectives and challenges in regional development, the REDI consultant concluded that the purpose of the new paradigm in this area has been accelerating the potential of regions for economic growth in upcoming decade. In this context, the administrative – territorial reform, which may take place no earlier than 2023, together with the following general local elections, will provide new perspectives for regional development policy. Also, with the administrative – territorial reform, it will increase the roles of the Regional Development Agencies (ADR) and Regional Development Councils (CDR).
The participants at the round table debated the need to adopt an integrated vision on regional development policy and assume by the central and local public administrations a joint sustained effort to ensure the competitiveness and sustainable development of ADR Sud and the quality of life of citizens. Also, the representatives of 08 districts of the southern region expressed their opinions regarding the opportunity of implementing the urban development policy in Moldova and adopting one of the variants proposed by experts.
The head of ADR Sud, Maria Culesov, has specified the importance of actively involving local public authorities, civil society and business representatives in the regional development processes, as well as in activities of developing a new Development Strategy, which would provide a vision of clear development of region for upcoming decade. Culesov referred to the need for the close cooperation between the local public administrations of levels I and II, respectively with ADR Sud, and for consolidation of the joint efforts that ultimately would lead to the development of region.
