Moldovan academician would have turned 90 today

Chisinau, 29 June /MOLDPRES/- Academician Petru Soltan, mathematician, specialist in geometry, topology, university professor, PhD in physical-mathematical sciences, member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, honorary member of the Romanian Academy would have turned 90 today.
As a deputy, chairman of the Commission for Science and Education and member of the Presidium of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova (1990-1994), he initiated the formation of the UNESCO National Commission and the Academy of Economic Studies, founding high schools, sending young people to study abroad, etc. Since 1994 he has been working as a senior scientific researcher at USM.
He is the founder of the Scientific School Theory of convex sets and the applications of mathematics. Scientific interests were related to the fields of geometry, topology, mathematical cybernetics, applied mathematics.
He signed about 150 scientific works in theoretical and applied mathematics, including six monographs.
He was awarded the title Honored Man of the Republic of Moldova (1994), the Medals Civic Merit (1996), S.I. Vavilov (Moscow, 1991), Mihai Eminescu (2000), Dimitrie Cantemir of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova (2001) and the Order of the Republic (2010).
In 2004 he was awarded the National Prize in Science and Technology.
He passed away on 15 July 2016.
