Chisinau, 2 March /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today evening met Vice President of the European Commission, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles and European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
Speaker Igor Grosu welcomed the high-ranking European officials in Moldova’s parliament and described their presence in Chisinau as a sign of solidarity with Moldova and its citizens, in a difficult moment, when the country is mobilized to help the refugees from Ukraine.
The sides discussed the security in the region and Moldova’s European integration.
”We would have liked to have such a visit in other circumstances; yet, the war unleashed in Ukraine hit the security and peace in the region. Moldova firmly condemns Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and we are by the side of the Ukrainian citizens,’’ Igor Grosu said.
The speaker stressed that the Presidency, Government, Parliament worked jointly 24 hours, in order to find the best solutions to support and provide assistance to the citizens who come from Ukraine and look for a shelter in Moldova. The latest figures show that 112,000 people from the neighbour country have entered Moldova during six days and almost a half of them are here, among us. All these people are accommodated either in special centres arranged or were hosted by ordinary citizens.
”The Moldovans united for Ukraine and we are making all needed efforts, so that Ukrainian citizens and their families, who took refuge in Moldova, are in safety. At the same time, we need more support on behalf of the development partners in the consolidation of the energy system, economic recovery and humanitarian projects,’’ Igor Grosu said.
The parliament speaker told the high commissioners that, for Moldova, the fight against corruption, the justice reform and the state institutions’ cleaning of corrupts remained priority.
”Our agenda is ambitious and we will observe each point. The future of our citizens is the European Union and they deserve to be Europeans,’’ Igor Grosu noted.
The European officials highly appreciated Moldova’s efforts to support the Ukrainian citizens who took refuge to Moldova in the wake of the military actions on the territory of their country.
The state’s leadership was assured that Moldova would be helped by the European institutions in these humanitarian efforts, as well as in combating the energy crisis and in other sectors.
At the visit to Chisinau, the EU officials informed that the European Union would provide Moldova with immediate assistance worth 15 million euros for managing the humanitarian situation concerning the refugees.
