ANSP warns people not to administer iodine preparations prophylactically

Chisinau, March 4 / MOLDPRES /- National Agency for Public Health announces that the prophylactic administration of stable iodine preparations (potassium iodides) is inappropriate because there is no basis for it and warns that their use may impair thyroid function.
Today ANSP came up with a reaction to the fire that broke out at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (Ukraine) and announced that there are no risks for the population of the Republic of Moldova regarding a possible exposure to ionizing radiation.
ANSP specified that it monitors daily the state of the radioactive fund on the territory of the country, by performing dosimetric measurements in the open space, gamma spectrometry investigations of various food products, drinking water, soil, atmospheric deposits and other objects. In this context, the institution announces that the flow rate of the equivalent dose of the gamma background is 80-130 nSv / h (nanoSievert / hour) and is within the limits of the natural background characteristic of the geographical area of Moldova.
Also today, the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna announced that the radiation level in the area is normal and continues to be monitored.
The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest in Ukraine and in Europe was heavily bombed last night. A shell hit an administrative building and set fire to the plant's site. On Friday morning, Ukrainian emergency services confirmed that they had managed to put out the fire.
