Chisinau, 8 March /MOLDPRES/ - As many as 262 women MPs and employees of the secretariat work in the parliament, which accounts for 57 per cent of all lawmakers and employees.
There are 40 women parliamentarians, which account for 39.6 per cent of all MPs in the parliament of 11th legislative period. This is the largest number of women lawmakers the Moldovan parliament ever had.
Moldova is among the European countries, which registered a high number of women members of parliament.
The country implemented measures of stimulating women in elections. In 2016, amendments to the legislation were made as to the minimum quota of representation of 50 per cent for both genders in the creation of the government, at the setting up of the leadership forums of the political parties and in the process of establishment of electoral lists for the national and local polls.
In the current legislative period, the parliament ratified the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention). This is an indispensable instrument of the system of protection of human rights. Thus, Moldova became the 35th Council of Europe member state (out of 47 ones) which ratifies the Istanbul Convention.
On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, marked today, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu conveyed a message:
”I congratulate you on the International Women’s Day. This year, we celebrate you in times of distress – there is war. We see how thousands of women with children cross the border tired, desperate and another dozens of thousands remained to defend their families, homes, country. At the same time, we have seen how you, women of Moldova, united and for 12 days already, you have been helping to give a warm meal, transport and shelter or you even receive them in your homes,’’ the parliament speaker’s message reads.
Igor Grosu voiced hope that everything which means war would soon disappear and the peace would bring us the happiness to live and love.
