Monument to Queen Marie of Romania to be errected in Chisinau

Chisinau, 9 March /MOLDPRES/ - The government today approved the foundation of the monument, Maria Alexandra Victoria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Queen of Romania, on the Bucharest Street, 64 from the Chisinau city. The monument’s author till be selected by contest.
According to the Culture Ministry, the monument is set to be erected, in order to perpetuate the memory of Queen Marie, an exceptional personality of the national history. ‘’Queen Marie, of English origin, an intelligent woman and full of vitality, got to know the Romanian nation, the Romanian culture, customs and especially the aspirations, which became her own values. She was a true fighter, founder of the Queen Marie Committee of Sanitary Automobiles in France, organizer of numerous field hospitals from the World War I, defender of Romania’s interests at the Paris Peace Conference, corresponding member of the Beaux-Arts de Paris Academy from France,’’ the ministry said.
In the inter-war period, one of the oldest institutions from Bessarabia, the girls Lyceum No 1 of Zemstvo, presently the Gheorghe Asachi Theoretical Lyceum from Chisinau, bore the name of Queen Marie. For this reason, the monument is suggested to be placed on the ground adjacent to the Gheorghe Asachi Theoretical Lyceum, on the Bucharest Street 64.
Given that the monument will be placed in the historical nucleus of Chisinau, according to the provisions of the law on public forum monuments, the work’s author will be selected by contest, organized by the Monumentum public association.
