Moldovan parliament speaker meets World Health Organization's regional director for Europe

Chisinau, 22 March /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today had a meeting with World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Hans Henri P. Kluge. Attending the event were the head and deputy head of the parliament’s commission for social protection, health and family, Dan Perciun and Adrian Belii, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.       

WHO’s Representative in Moldova Miljana Grbic and WHO Representative at EU Oxana Domenti participated in the meeting on behalf of the World Health Organization.  

The main subject of the discussions was the humanitarian situation in Moldova and assessing the needs of the country’s health system, in the context of the refugees’ crisis. 

The WHO officials were informed that more than 360,000 citizens of Ukraine had entered Moldova so far. Over 100,000 refugees remain accommodated at those 104 placement centres and more than 5,000 applications for asylum were registered.  

”We regard with concern and sympathy the Ukrainian nation and we do our utmost to provide them with the assistance necessary. We thank you for being with Moldova in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and we count on your support in the management of this new crisis,’’ Igor Grosu said.

According to data unveiled by the Health Ministry, during 26 days, over 1,300 refugees appealed to assistance at hospital public medical and sanitary institutions from Moldova and over 400 were hospitalized. Also, medical teams were created at each border crossing point and at the temporary placement centres.  

”I want to express gratitude to WHO which, with EU’s support, provided Moldova with two consignments of humanitarian assistance with medicines and medical products,’’ the parliament speaker stressed.    

The head of the parliament’s commission for social protection, health and family, Dan Perciun, invoked the pressure of the refugees’ crisis on the health system of Moldova. He noted that the support of the international partners was quite important for its resistance and sustainability.  

The MPs reiterated their gratitude for the every support from which Moldova and its citizens had benefited on behalf of the World Health Organization and showed firm in the advancing with quick steps in the further cooperation.   

The lawmakers received assurances that WHO’s priority was to back such countries as Moldova in helping citizens of Ukraine and the example of solidarity proved by the country and its citizens towards the Ukrainian nation was impressive and worthy to be encouraged.
