World Theatre Day marked on 27 March

15:19 | 27.03.2022 Category: Culture

Chisinau, 27 March /MOLDPRES/ - The theatrical community, artists and audience mark the World Theatre Day today. This is an extra occasion to offer a sign of gratitude to those who participate in the miraculous creative act: actors, dramatists, stage managers, script writers, stage employees, as well as audience.

The World Theatre Day was established in Vienna by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) at the World Congress in 1961. This holiday was for the first time marked on 27 March 1962, when the season of the Theatre of Nations was opened in Paris. Starting from 1962, the World Theatre Day became an annual event, organized by the ITI centres and the international theatre community. ITI represents the most important non-governmental organization in the artistic field and was founded at an initiative by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1948.

To mark this day, diverse national and international theatre events are organized, during which the audience is able to meet its favourite artists. One of the most important of these events is the conveying of a traditional international message. Each year, an internationally recognized personality is invited to inform about his/her reflections on one of the oldest artistic forms, the theatre. The message, translated in over 50 languages, is read to spectators before the performances in the evening of 27 March and is published in newspapers and magazines, broadcast by radio and television.

The first dramatic repertoire theatre, with permanent troupe, founded in Chisinau in 1921, was the National Theatre (presently the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre). Presently, 19 professional theatres are recorded in Moldova, where about 1,570 actors work.
