Electoral corruption to be punished more severely

Chisinau, 31 March /MOLDPRES/- MPs today adopted a draft law tightening sanctions for political and electoral corruption.
It is focused on issues such as misuse of administrative resources in the election campaign, organized transportation of voters to polling stations and involvement of non-profit organizations in the election campaign.
Thus, among the amendments made to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova is the increase of sanctions for preventing the free exercise of the electoral right. The Criminal Code was also supplemented by an article on the illegal financing of political parties, electoral contestants, initiative groups or election campaigns.
Amendments were also made to the Contravention Code. Thus, the transportation of voters to the polling station, on election day will be sanctioned with a fine from 60 to 120 misdemeanor units for individuals and from 180 to 300 misdemeanor units for legal entities. The organization of transporting voters to the polling stations will also be sanctioned. At the same time, the use of hate speech and incitement to discrimination will be punished.
Also, according to the project, the candidates will not have the right to launch or participate in the launch of infrastructure projects or acquisitions made from the public budget.
