Moldovan parliament speaker meets Latvia's president

Chisinau, 7 April /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today had a meeting with President of Latvia Egils Levits. The officials discussed Russia’s invasion against Ukraine and its consequences, as well as the security challenges in the region, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
Igor Grosu thanked the Latvian head of state for the humanitarian assistance provided to Moldova, as well as for the decision to receive 500 Ukrainian refugees who had come to Moldova.
”For Moldova, the hosting of about 100,000 Ukrainian citizens is a great effort; yet, we manage to cope with this flow of refugees, due to our people, who host more than 70,000 Ukrainians and the others are in special centres,’’ the parliament speaker stressed.
The two officials agreed to actively work to deepen the bilateral relations and Moldova needs expertise in more priority sectors.
The sides discussed the energy crisis. Igor Grosu noted that Moldova had got out of the last complicated winter with more lessons learned and that the country was already preparing for the next winter through projects which will allow diversifying the energy resources.
An important subject was the parliamentary agenda. In the context, the parliament speaker emphasized that the zero priority was the justice reform. Moreover, the external evaluation of the prosecutors and judges will start soon. ‘’This is an important step, in order to resuscitate the judicial system and clean the state’s institutions,’’ the speaker noted.
In the end, Igor Grosu expressed gratitude to the president of Latvia for the support provided to Moldova in its European integration.
”On 4 March, Moldova submitted the application on accession to the European Union. Moldova’s citizens chose Europe through their vote at the last elections,’’ the parliament speaker added.
