Ban on fishing announced in Moldova as of 15 April

Chisinau, 14 April /MOLDPRES/-  Environment Agency has issued an order to establish periods and no-fishing zones in natural fish aquatic objectives in 2022.

According to the document, from April 15 to June 15, a period of prohibition of fishing in the aquatic objectives of the Republic of Moldova is declared.

In order to prevent any violation of the border area regime, for the purpose of illegal fishing using vessels, the authorities have requested a review of the manner of keeping and keeping records of floating means in border waters.

They must “reflect symbols of the flags of the state at the stern or at the bow and of their registration numbers; hold a boat permit issued by the Border Police; to park in the places established by the port authorities or, as the case may be, by the local public administration authorities, with the approval of the Border Police, taking measures by their owners to prevent their illegal use”.

Also, in cooperation with the Environmental Agency and the local public administration authorities, raids will be organized and conducted in order to detect and counter poaching and illegal fishing. Respectively, the boats, the service equipment, the special means and the equipment will be used intensively.

The Border Police urged fishermen and fishing enthusiasts “to take a responsible and conscientious attitude towards the rules imposed. Those who will be found to be engaged in illegal activities (fishing poaching and illegal fishing) during the prohibition period will be held liable, risking fines and penalties.

The amount of compensation for damage caused by illegal fishing, trade, possession and export or by destruction of aquatic biological resources in aquatic fisheries objectives has been increased.

In this regard, MPs voted in first reading on the legislative initiative put forward by the chair of the Committee on the Environment and Regional Development, Elena Bodnarenco. The project was supported by 91 MPs present at the March 17 sitting.

According to the draft, the proposed amounts of compensation for damage caused by fishing, trade, possession and illegal export or destruction of aquatic biological resources are based on the categories of rarity, vulnerability, ecological and economic importance of the species. The document included 52 species of fish and the amount of compensation to be paid for each specimen, regardless of its size. The amount of compensations varies between 1,500 and 15,000 lei.

Currently, the compensations for the damage caused to the aquatic biological resources vary from 50 to 5,000 lei.
