Moldovan government's secretary general participates in meeting of Council of Europe's European Committee on Democracy and Governance

Chisinau, 22 April /MOLDPRES/ - Moldovan Government’s Secretary General Dumitru Udrea on 21-22 April 2022 participates in the 15th meeting of the Council of Europe’s European Committee on Democracy and Governance (CDDG), held in Strasbourg, France, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.    

At the CDDG meeting, the secretary general had a string of meetings with Council of Europe (CoE) officials, more exactly CoE Deputy Secretary General Bjørn Berge, Secretary General of the CoE Congress of Local and Regional Authorities Andreas Kiefer, as well as with Special Representative of the CoE Secretary General on Migration and Refugees Leyla Kayacik.  

Dumitru Udrea stressed the Moldovan government’s commitment for the implementation of the reforms, in accordance with the Council of Europe’s standards, especially as regards the commitments of implementing the principles of good governance and promotion of the local democracy, as well as the principal priorities of the government as regards the rule of law state and fight against corruption.

At the same time, during discussions on the actions undertaken by the Moldovan cabinet for managing the crisis of refugees from Ukraine, CoE Deputy Secretary General Bjørn Berge expressed the organization’s openness for backing Moldova in this context. An important platform to this end represents the Moldova – Council of Europe Action Plan, which is under implementation.   

During his speech at the meeting’s plenum, within the session on the promotion of the democratic governance through joint experience, Dumitru Udrea shared Moldova’s concerns about the regional situation and the war in Ukraine. The official also highlighted the priority No 1 of the country on these days and namely the filling in of the European Union’s questionnaire, which represents one of the first steps for getting the status of candidate country in EU.    

„The documents of national policies show the principles of good governance of CDDG, making sure that the decisions are consulted and adopted transparently and by common consent with all sides interested, including the local administration and the civil society, as well as the adaptation of the rules and procedures focused on the man. Besides, we commit that the state’s resources are spent in a participatory way and transparently and to regularly communicate with our citizens,’’ Dumitru Udrea said.    

Among those who also took the floor at the same session was also Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine Vyacheslav Nehoda and Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Mzia Giorgobiani.

The Council of Europe’s European Committee on Democracy and Governance is the Council of Europe intergovernmental forum where representatives of the member States meet to develop European standards (recommendations, guidelines, reports), to exchange and follow up on the state of democratic governance in Europe, and to work together to strengthen democratic institutions at all levels of government.
