Chisinau, May 25 / MOLDPRES /- The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today proposed the digitization of the electoral process by applying remote voting - correspondence or internet, using electronic means of identification. The amendments are included in the draft Electoral Code and will be forwarded to Parliament for adoption.

During the presentation of the project, CEC head Angelica Caraman said that the changes are aimed at addressing the shortcomings identified by election officials and include the observations of the Constitutional Court and national and international missions.

"The new provisions are the result of an extensive process of revising the current electoral legislation. By adopting the document, we want to improve the electoral process and provide citizens with modern and quality services. We want the citizen, wherever he is, to be able to exercise his right to vote and to have participatory power ", said Angelica Caraman.

Attending the event, Speaker Igor Grosu said that the document focuses on the issue of voting in the diaspora, the correct and transparent financing of the electoral campaign, the coverage of the campaigns and the electoral threshold. "In order to have a free and fair electoral process, the state institutions need functional tools that will be applied during the voting. At the same time, the Electoral Code is the basis for a fair and democratic election, that is why these changes are extremely necessary for our country ", he said.

The document also provides for raising the professionalism of employees, reducing the number of CEC members to 7, and their term of office would be 5 years. Also, changes will be made to the electoral rolls and to the submission and examination of appeals.

The draft Electoral Code is to be adopted at least one year before an election.
