Chisinau, 8 June /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu today made the following statement after the completion of the working agenda in Brussels:
„The goal of this visit to Brussels is double: on the one hand, this is a very important moment for the promotion of our European perspective.
Next week, the European Commission will come up with an Opinion, thereby recommending that the member states undertake the next steps in the relation with Moldova, in the light of the answers which we gave in the questionnaire.
Now, it is a quite important moment, in order to do our utmost to influence the position of the member states, of the European Commission, so that Moldova advances towards the accession to EU in the next weeks.
Our hope is to get a clear perspective of joining EU and to gradually advance towards the status of candidate for accession.
This is our hope and on these days and weeks, we really go through a very important phase for our European aspirations and I availed myself of the occasion of this visit to Brussels, in order to persuade as many as possible interlocutors, as many as possible of the authors of this opinion of the European Commission, that Moldova is a European state, which deserves to find itself inside the European Union, with the help of the European institutions.
Another equally important objective deals with our needs to diversify the agricultural exports. You know well that our farmers were badly hit by this war, by the blocking of the transport ways and along with the colleagues of the government, with Mrs. Prime Minister, colleagues of the Economics Ministry, Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry, we have worked hard in the last months to persuade the European Union to increase the quotas for our agricultural exports, especially of fruits and vegetables, our hope being to achieve certain results in the near future.
Today, I had a meeting, including with the European commissioner for agriculture, with whom I discussed the increase in the quotas and enhancing our capacity to export fruits and vegetables to the European Union, so that we can ensure a decent living, decent incomes for our farmers, who are obviously hit by this war quite negatively.’’
