Moldova participates in meetings of Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm Conferences

Chisinau, June 10 / MOLDPRES /- Moldovan delegation made up of representatives from the Ministry of Environment is participating in meetings of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conferences, which took place on 6-17 June in Switzerland.

More than 1,500 participants, representing the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Conventions), met in Geneva, and this year's conference was entitled Global Agreements for a Healthy Planet: Rational Management of Chemicals and of waste. The agenda of the meetings includes topics related to the impact of chemicals and hazardous waste on human health and the environment.

"Our challenge during these meetings is to try to make visible the issues related to chemicals and waste, consumption and production and pollution. We have invested a lot of time trying to create the perfect or almost perfect environment for the parties to negotiate and reach a consensus," BRS Executive Secretary Rolph Payet said.

For his part, the Executive Secretary of the Food and Agriculture Organization, part of the Secretariat of the Rotterdam Convention, Rémi Nono Womdim, called on all parties and institutions involved in the BRS to cooperate and step up their efforts to stem the global pollution crisis biodiversity loss and climate change through proper management of chemicals and waste.

The parties will also discuss ways in which conventions can contribute to the key outcomes of the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5), in particular the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, which will develop the binding instrument on legal view to end plastic pollution and the science and policy panel on chemicals and waste that is expected to support pollution prevention.
