Moldovan electoral body approves proposals on Electoral Code's amendment

Chisinau, 14 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) approved proposals on the amendment of the Electoral Code today.

The proposals were worked out following an analysis of the electoral legal framework and the related one, as well as in order to settle the Communications of the Constitutional Court, issued after the holding of the last national ballots. At the same time, the efforts of improving the legislation were based on the notifications made by electoral subjects, as well as by taking into account the findings and recommendations of the international and national election observation missions.

During the draft’s presentation, CEC head Angelica Caraman said that more basic notions had been amended in the new document. ‘’The document envisages that the election day will be Saturday and the electoral process will be carried out till 20:00, with possibility to extend the voting time by three hours. Also, the draft provides for a cut in the number of CEC members to 7 and the duration of their mandate is to be 5 years,’’ Angelica Caraman said.

Also, during the registration of the electoral candidates, one citizen will be able to sign for more candidates in the subscription lists. At the same time, CEC decided to reduce the number of signatures for holding a referendum – from 200,000 to 100,000.

„The document also sees changes as regards the setting up of the polling stations abroad and on the left bank of Dniester, providing of financial support on behalf of the state for electoral contenders and cutting the number of acts necessary for the voting procedure,’’ the CEC head noted.

Following the approval, the CEC decision with the concerned annexes will be submitted to the government and parliament for the consideration of the opportunity of amending the electoral legislation and the related one.

Also today, CEC approved the number of employees, organizational structure and the chart of the institution, which is made up of 53 employees.
