Chisinau, 14 June /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova has proved heroism in the management of the crisis of refugees from Ukraine and deserves every support on behalf of the international community. Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Kenji Okamura made statements to this effect at a news briefing held jointly with Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita in Chisinau today.
„The International Monetary Fund is with Moldova, being ready to consolidate the nice relations we have. Or, by providing additional financing, we help the member states and the people hit by the war and the crisis in the region,’’ Kenji Okamura said.
For her part, PM Natalia Gavrilita appreciated and expressed gratitude for a decision of the IMF Board of Directors from 11 May to provide additional financing to the country, given a chain of crises faced by Moldova, in the context of the situation in the region.
The inflation, the deterioration of the commercial flows and other difficulties faced by Moldova because of the war prompted IMF to immediately disburse 144.81 million dollars (108.15 million Special Drawing Rights (SDR)) within the programme backed within the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Moldova.
Also, the overall volume of financing was increased by about 260.11 million dollars (194.26 million SDR), which now reaches 795.72 million dollars (594.26 million SDR).
"The means provided will allow Moldova facing the challenges related to the war in Ukraine. They will also encourage the additional foreign financing, will protect the citizens through the providing of a budgetary support for the most vulnerable categories and will further boost the reforms,’’ according to the National Bank of Moldova.
