Moldovan PM asks parliament to extend emergency state in Moldova

Chisinau, 23 June /MOLDPRES/ - The emergency state is extended by another 45 days in Moldova starting from 24 June 2022. The decision today was approved by MPs’ majority vote, at the cabinet’s request, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.   

In the parliament’s plenum, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita referred to the maintaining of the danger to the regional and national security. At the same time, the PM highlighted the importance of giving the government leverages needed for the management of the crises triggered by the war in Ukraine.

The prime minister said that, while in the beginning of the emergency state period, the efforts had been directed to manage the refugees’ crisis, which overlapped on the energy and sanitary crises, in the next months, it was necessary to consolidate the institutions and provide quick solutions, in order to ensure the food security, manage the logistic chains and carry out the commercial connections. On this period, the government and the Commission for Emergency Situations (CSE) approved important decisions, which regarded the border security, public order, management of refugees’ flow, providing financial and social facilities to Ukrainian citizens, as well as ensuring Moldova’s energy security.     

„I committed before the parliament that the government, through CSE, will act transparently and the derogations which the cabinet is to make from the legal framework will be proportional and necessary for overcoming the emergency situation. I have fulfilled this promise and will continue observing it. In the present conditions, when risks are maintained as to the security of Moldova’s supply with electric energy, natural gas and oil products, the extension of the state of emergency is important, in order to have possibility to promptly intervene to supply all consumers with energy resources,’’ Natalia Gavrilita said.     

Also, according to the prime minister, the prolongation of the war in Ukraine hits also other vital processes for Moldova, such as the transport infrastructure and the unpredictable situation in the neighbor country can lead to an increase in the flow of refugees at any moment. ‘’We permanently monitor the situation, in order to prevent and anticipate the effects which can threaten the aspects of the social, economic life, as well as the security of Moldova. We need, also in continuation, instruments able to allow taking quick and efficient decisions,’’ the prime minister stressed.  

The actions will be focused, as case may be, on the allocation of financial means, simplification of the customs control procedures, synchronization of the work of the posts, in order to ease the traffic at border. The Chisinau authorities stay in permanent touch with the foreign partners, in order to identify the best solutions of solving the current problems. ‘’I convey a special thought of gratitude to the European Union, its member states, especially Romania, with which we have already started the needed procedures for easing the flow of goods and passengers. We will together manage to settle including the problems of this kind,’’ Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita told the MPs.    

The parliament established the state of emergency in Moldova on 24 February 2022, which was subsequently extended by 60 days.
