Chisinau, 23 June /MOLDPRES/ - The movement of trains for freight transport on the railway segment Berezino (Ukraine)-Basarabeasca ( Moldova) will be reopened in next autumn, under a memorandum of understanding between Moldova’s Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry (MIDR) and the Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine on the development of railway connections. Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu and Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov signed the document today.
Under the memorandum, Moldova will be able to export/import goods through the Izmail port, placed on the bank of Danube, and thus the agglomeration in the Reni port will be diminished. At the same time, through this railway segment, Ukraine will be able to export goods to Moldova and EU countries.
„The resumption of the movement on the Berezino-Basarabeasca railway segment will turn the Basarabeasca town into an international logistic hub, through which the connection of the ports from Yuzhny, Odessa, Chernomorsk, Belgorod-Dnestrovsk, Izmail, Reni, Giurgiulesti, Galati, Braila and Constanta will be ensured. In this way, the port complexes will become more competitive and the beneficiaries of the port services will have a more diversified supply,’’ MIDR said.
The Berezino-Basarabeasca railway segment was disassembled in Ukraine in 1997. The segment’s construction is to be carried out on a distance of about 23 km. A distance of 1.2 km of this railway segment will be built on the territory of Moldova.
