Seven persons detained following raids at Codru mayoralty in Moldova

Chisinau, 24 June /MOLDPRES/ - Seven people today were detained following 35 searches made at the mayoralty of the Codru town, Chisinau municipality. The people are suspected of the release, against bribe, of acts for construction in the Moldovan capital.   

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG), economic agents and tens of beneficiaries have got in the focus of the National Anticorruption Centre (CNA) and prosecutors, after during more months they were documented in a file on influence peddling. They are suspected of having acted in complicity and would have been involved in the processing of permissive acts for various constructions in Chisinau, for favouring interests of companies and for bribing civil servants from the Codru Mayoralty.    

According to the inquiry’s data, the scheme’s organizer would be one of the local councilors of the Codru Mayoralty, who would have committed to influence decision-makers of the mayoralty, in charge of the processing of authorizations for construction, town plans and other permissive acts. He would have acted in the interest of more companies and private people and in exchange of sums of money, he would have managed to positively influence decision-makers’ decisions.  

Within special investigation measures, law-enforcers established that decision-makers of the Codru mayoralty and local council would have systematically received sums of money amounting to thousands of euros, in order to release the acts necessary and issue decisions in favour of more private people and representatives of economic agents.   

Seven people were detained and placed in CNA’s isolation ward for 72 hours and are prosecuted for influence peddling. It is about two local councilors, the chief architect, the Council’s secretary, the director of two constructions companies and one private person.
