Moldovan authorities say new wave of infections with coronavirus strain of Omicron variant

Chisinau, 11 July /MOLDPRES/ - The new wave of infections with coronavirus contains the strain of the Omicron variant, which is quite infectious, especially among children. The head of the Moldovan capital’s medical and social assistance general department, Boris Gilca, made statements to this effect at a today’s operative meeting of the municipal services.      

According to Gilca, the number of COVID-19 cases is on the rise and their share fits into the yellow code of coronavirus. ‘’Presently, there are over 90 children suspected or confirmed with COVID-19. Two sections are activated at the hospital of infectious diseases for children. At the same time, 21 pregnant women were confirmed with coronavirus. According to samples, it is about the Omicron variant, which is very infectious, but does not trigger serious forms. The municipal authorities are prepared to intervene; if needed, we will activate additional sections at the Valentin Ignatenco municipal hospital. At present, we have enough tests and all necessary medicines,’’ Boris Gilca noted.      

At the same time, the municipal authorities recommended that the residents who travel abroad take into account the protection measures and get vaccinated.

Also, last week, over 2,800 addressings were registered at medical institutions from Chisinau, as a result of which about 1,900 patients were hospitalized.
