Chisinau, 21 July /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament today ratified the Convention concerning International Carriage by Rail (COTIF). The accession to this agreement will allow Moldova enforcing the international standards in the railway transport sector: CIV - Uniform Rules concerning the Contract of International Carriage of Passengers by Rail and CIM - Uniform Rules concerning the Contract of International Carriage of Goods by Rail.
Under the document, the Convention’s goal is to develop and consolidate the cooperation in the railway transport sector through ensuring the observance of the international standards. Moldova’s joining this convention will allow enhancing the capacity of competition on the routes in transit of goods. Authorities estimate that, in Moldova, the volume of goods in transit might annually increase by 30 per cent, which represents about 606.3 thousand tons.
The convention ratified by the parliament is at the basis of the work of the Intergovernmental Organization for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF), which elaborates and enforces single standards for the railway transport network. The structure was set up in 1985 and at present it has 50 member states from Europe, North Africa and Middle East.
