Train traffic on Cahul - Giurgiulesti section closed

Chisinau, August 30 /MOLDPRES/- Moldova Railway state-owned enterprise (CFM) announced today that train traffic on Cahul - Giurgiulesti section was closed. The cause lies in the landslides that affected the railway infrastructure, more precisely, it is about 350 meters of railway on Colibași - Giurgiulești segment.

According to CFM, the freight trains will be directed along the route Basarabeasca - Etulia - Reni - Giurgiulesti. "We will grant discounts and changes in tariffs for freight transport on this segment, in a way that does not affect the commercial interests of customers," the quoted source said.

Currently, CFM is working to remedy the problem with the designer who participated in the construction of the railway section in 2008, and soon geodesy and geological research will be done to see what were the causes that led to these landslides and how such situations could be prevented in the future. The affected railway section is to be rehabilitated after reliable engineering solutions are identified.

At the same time, the authorities of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are advancing decisively in the discussions on the transit of trains with the origin and destination of Moldova through Reni station, without customs control, said CFM.
