Chisinau, 23 Sep. /MOLDPRES/- Electric scooters and bicycles will only be able to travel on specially designed tracks, and if they do not exist, travel will only be allowed on road sectors where the maximum speed allowed is up to 50 km/h. The amendments to the Road Traffic Regulation (RCR) were published in the Official Journal of Moldova today.

Under the document, the notion of electric scooter and its technical specifications were set in the RCR - if the vehicle registers a motorization capacity greater than 500 W and has a speed greater than 25 km/h, the person is obliged to go through the schooling process to get the special right to drive for the AM subcategory. Also, the characteristic indicators of the lanes reserved for cyclists and the charging stations for electric cars have been set.

At the same time, the prohibition to use the mobile phone or audio headphones while traveling on a scooter, bicycle is set, and the prohibition to drive the vehicle under the influence of alcohol or narcotic substances has been extended to drivers of electric scooters. At the same time, the obligation to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle on roads where the travel speed exceeds 50 km/h (national roads) was set. Also, their movement on the road will only be allowed to people who have turned 16 years old.

Following the amendments to RCR, in areas with increased flow of vulnerable traffic participants, the speed will be reduced to 30 km/h. These areas include spaces adjacent to educational institutions, hospitals, parks, historic city centers. Thus, managing speed control will limit the negative effects of aggressive driving.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in the last two years, there has been an increase in the number of electric vehicles driven by young and inexperienced people, which increases the risk of accidents. Thus, this year, 52 accidents involving electric scooters were registered, as a result of which 52 people were injured and one died.
