Ten years pass since death of well-known Moldovan fine artist

Chisinau, 16 October /MOLDPRES/ - Ten years have passed since the death of fine artist, portraitist, known through his collection of masks made of papier maché (pressed cardboard), laureate of the State Prize, People’s Artist of Moldova, holder of the Order of the Republic Glebus Sainciuc.
A departed actor, stage manager, former culture minister Ion Ungureanu said in an interview that Glebus Sainciuc had been a distinguished man. ‘’The Sainciuc dynasty was unique in its kind in Moldova,’’ Ion Ungureanu stressed.
Glebus Sainciuc was born in Chisinau on 19 July 1919. During 1942-1944, he studied at the Architecture Faculty of the Bucharest-based Poly-technical Institute. In 1947, he graduated from the Fine Arts School of Chisinau. The fine artist fully showed himself as portraitist. He created portraits of well-known people, personalities of art, literature and culture: soprano Maria Biesu, writer Ion Creanga, fine artist Igor Vieru, etc. Glebus Sainciuc painted the portrait of opera singer Maria Cebotari on the period when her name was practically banned in Moldova. Sainciuc was appreciated also for his impressive collection of masks of papier maché, about 300 units. He made the masks of folk music singer Nicolae Sulac, writer Ion Druta, poets Grigore Vieru, Aureliu Busuioc, etc. Sainciuc was author of more painting and graphic works, which were highly appreciated by critics, due to the originality of the style and the talent to render the essence of characters.
The artistic value of Glebus Sainciuc’s works was appreciated through high state distinctions: Merited Master of Art (1976), knight of the Order of the Republic (1999), Doctor Honoris Causa of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (2009). The works by Glebus Sainciuc are preserved in museum collections from Moldova, Romania, Russia and private collections from France, Germany, New Zealand, USA, Sweden.
Glebus Sainciuc died in Chisinau, at the age of 93 years, on 16 October 2012. He was buried at the Central Orthodox Cemetery on the Armeneasca Street from the capital.
