United States to provide Moldova with support to consolidate energy security

Chisinau, 2 November /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova will receive support on behalf of the United States worth 19.5 million dollars for strengthening the country’s energy security and reducing the dependence on a single source of supply. To this end, the cabinet today approved the starting of negotiations and the signing of the 14th Amendment to the agreement on assistance concluded between the governments of Moldova and the USA, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The additional financing is meant to contribute to the connection of the key elements of Moldova’s energy sector to the European systems, attraction of investments into the local production of energy, diversification of the supply with natural gas and enhancing the energy efficiency.
Also, the Amendment provides for the establishment of the terms and conditions as to the non-refundable budgetary support of 30 million dollars, due to be provided to Moldova by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The money will be used for the management of the energy crisis on the component of the electric energy.
The agreement on assistance on the objective of development between the governments of Moldova and the United States for the sustainable economic growth anchored in the European integration was signed in 2016. The overall sum of the non-refundable assistance resulted from this agreement is of about 172.7 million dollars.
