Moldovan head of state meets members of U.S. Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations

Chisinau, 6 December /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu in Washington has had a meeting with a Democrat senator, Chair of the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Foreign Relations Bob Menendez and a republican senator, member of this committee James Risch. The discussion was focused on the regional security, compromised by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the crises triggered by it, the presidential press service has reported.
The head of state referred to the fact that Russia’s air attacks against Ukraine threatened the security of Moldova and the citizens have to cope with severe energy and economic crises. President Maia Sandu thanked for the assistance provided by the United States for diminishing the consequences of the war. She stressed that Moldova further needed support for the consolidation of the defence sector and energy resilience, including through investments in the renewable energy. Maia Sandu also highlighted the importance of the United States’ support for Ukraine.
The officials also tackled the subject on combating corruption. In the context, President Maia Sandu said that the support provided by the United States in the fight against corruption, including through the sanctioning of those who had substantially harmed the state’s budget, was quite important, in order to manage to strengthen the democracy and the rule of law state.
President Maia Sandu is on a visit to the USA on 5-7 December.
