Chisinau, Dec. 7 /MOLDPRES/- On a visit to the USA, President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu met with Secretary of the Treasury of the United States Janet Yellen. The discussion focused on the anti-corruption actions undertaken by the Chisinau authorities and the support we need to speed up the process, as well as the current situation in Moldova and the region, the presidential press service has reported.
Maia Sandu noted that our society welcomed the decision of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Treasury to sanction 21 persons and entities that defrauded public funds, controlled justice and promoted Russian influence in Moldova. The official voiced hope that the example of the United States will cause other countries to support our anti-corruption efforts, and the list of sanctions will be filled with the names of other persons who have harmed the state.
Maia Sandu said that currently the priority is the recovery of stolen assets, including those outside the country. Thus, a closer cooperation between Moldovan legal institutions and those of other countries, including the USA, is necessary. The topic of increasing US support for Moldova in the context of multiple crises caused by Russia's war in Ukraine was also addressed.
