Northern Development Region to use smart specialisation study

Chisinau, Feb. 8 /MOLDPRES/- Members of the Regional Council for Northern Development yesterday approved the smart specialisation study of the region, set up as part of a support project in response to emergency situations. It is implemented by ADR Nord and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through the Modernization of Local Public Services in Moldova project.

According to the Regional Development Agency (ADR) North, one of the set directions is to support sectors with potential for smart specialisation, with an impact on economic growth by increasing the regional degree of research, technological development, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Mariana Cebotari, planning specialist of ADR Nord, said that the smart specialization approach of the region will contribute to directing the resources available for research and innovation exactly in the areas where they can be fully used - the economic sectors that represent increased competitiveness and attractiveness.

ADR Nord head Maria Prisacari believes that smart specialisation is particularly necessary in this period of economic crisis. "This is the best way to optimize the research and innovation benefits of public investment. The main expected impact is growth and success in the sectors where our regional economy can be competitive, even being able to change and modernize the regional production model", she said.

Smart specialisation is a concept promoted by the European Union to express the framework and mechanisms of specialization of innovation processes at the level of a developing country/region. In the financial year 2021-2027, this concept is supported by the strategic investment objectives of the EU Cohesion Policy.
