Chisinau, February 15 /MOLDPRES/- Speaker Igor Grosu participated today in events dedicated to the Memorial Day of those who died in Afghanistan war, together with veterans and members of the families of those who lost their lives in this war, the parliament's communication and public relations department has reported.
The speaker honored the memory of over 300 Moldovans who fell in the war in Afghanistan, keeping a minute of silence and laying flowers at the commemorative plaques of the soldiers.
Grosu said that the consequences of the war thousands of kilometers from our country are still being felt in many families in the Republic of Moldova, and the suffering and pain did not end with the war in Afghanistan. Some families lost their loved ones – 301 young soldiers, barely in their 20s, died needlessly of an unknown cause. About 700 other young Moldovans, who were fulfilling their duty as soldiers, were wounded, and another 12 thousand returned home with the effects of the war, many of them dying in the meantime.
"Today, we commemorate, first of all, those who never returned home - they are people whose lives were suddenly, unjustly and tragically cut short. The memory of these young people will remain alive. Today we are with all those who survived and who preserve the memory of fallen comrades", he said.
Grosu reminded that unfortunately for almost a year another war has been taking place on the border of our country - Russia's aggression on Ukraine, which led to thousands of victims, and millions of Ukrainian citizens were forced to flee. "Thank you that, at these moments, we together preserve peace and tranquility in the country, and we can also help our Ukrainian friends. I urge you to do everything possible to continue to preserve peace and tranquility in the Republic of Moldova", he said.
Today we mark 34 years since the withdrawal of Soviet military troops from Afghanistan. Almost 13 thousand Moldovans participated in the war, and 301 Moldovans lost their lives.
