Moldovan PM visits exhibitions marking one year of Russia's war against Ukraine

Chisinau, 24 February /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Dorin Recean, along with Culture Minister Sergiu Prodan and Ambassador of Ukraine to Moldova Marko Shevchenko, have participated in the inauguration of an exhibition titled, Culture in the Crosshair. The event is occasioned by one year since the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The exhibition comprises 13 posters with pictures of well-known buildings and historical monuments, destroyed by the Russian invasion, such as the building of the Mariupol Theatre, monument to Taras Shevchenko, Local History Museum from Ivankiv, Kiev region.
The prime minister said that the people of Moldova would remain with the Ukrainian nation, which defends its democracy. ‘’We thank the Ukrainians for the fact that they defend their Motherland, defend, in, fact, us as well and serve as example of a united and resilient society. The government which I lead will take care of the children and mothers from Ukraine who took refuge to our country. At the same time, we are obliged to strengthen Moldova’s capacity to ensure the regional stability and security,’’ PM Dorin Recean said.
For his part, Ambassador Marko Shevchenko noted that the destruction of the cultural objects was an attempt to wipe off the history of a nation: ‘’When a nation has historical memory and identity, it cannot be defeated. We will protect our cultural heritage and we will necessarily reach a new cultural revival.’’
Culture Minister Sergiu Prodan emphasized that the exhibition today was inaugurated in more European capitals and conveyed a message on the scope of the cultural tragedy. ‘’We see museums, community centres, architecture monuments as they looked before the war and afterwards, in the crosshair. The exhibition perfectly fits the string of manifestations dedicated the Year of Ukrainian Culture in Moldova,’’ Minister Sergiu Prodan noted.
The exhibition organized at an initiative of the Culture Ministries from Moldova and Ukraine will be hosted by the Chisinau-based National Art Museum during two weeks.
An exhibition of photos titled, Big Heart, was inaugurated today too. It comprises photos of Moldovan volunteers and Ukrainian citizens who came to Moldova. ‘’The most important contribution to the management of refugees’ crisis belonged to our people, who showed solidarity, opened their homes and remained with the Ukrainians who need help,’’ PM Dorin Recean said.
The head of the National Congress of Ukrainians from Moldova, Dmitrii Lecarțev, said the photos selected for the exhibition showed the grief of the people and, at the same time, represent a symbol of the support provided by people from Moldova: ‘’Moldova has become a symbol for other countries for the way it managed the refugees’ crisis. We will continue backing the Ukrainians and I am sure that Moldova and Ukraine will be soon members of the European Union.’’
