Wines from south Moldova confirm quality following organoleptic assessment

Chisinau, 27 February /MOLDPRES/ - The white, rose and red wines, produced in the Valul lui Traian Protected Geographical Indication vine-growing and wine-making region have been subjected to an organoleptic assessment. The results of tastings, made public by the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry (MAIA) today, confirmed that the wines from this region were of high quality.       

The quality of wines was evaluated based on an automated information system, by a commission of seven tasters, set up by the National Office of Vine and Wine (ONVV). About 20 wineries from the region presented 105 samples of wines, of which 40 white wines, 11 rose ones and 54 red wines.

„The wines come from native and international varieties - Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Saperavi, Riesling, Muscat Otonnel, Rkatsiteli, Feteasca Albă și Feteasca Neagră. Presently, the wines are appreciated not only in Moldova, but also in such countries as Romania, Germany, China, Japan, USA, Canada, etc.,’’ MAIA said.   

„Valul lui Traian is the delimited vine-growing and wine-making region for producing wine with Protected Geographical Indication, placed in southern Moldova. This region during time has distinguished itself through specific environmental peculiarities, which lead to the getting of wines of striking typicity and peculiar for this region. The vine-growing and wine-making region comprises three sub-regions with specific pedo-climatic peculiarities: Bugeac Lowlands, Tigheci Forests, Prut Terraces, which fit into the natural East European and Mediterranean zone of forest steppes with downy oak and xerophyte steppe with beard grass and Austrian wormwood.         

The region includes seven administrative units: Leova, Cantemir, Cahul, Comrat, Ceadar-Lunga, Taraclia and Vulcanesti.
