Moldovan cabinet, UNDP, government of Japan launch two projects on energy, food, community security worth 8.4 million dollars

Chisinau, 20 March /MOLDPRES/ - The government of Moldova has informed about the launch of two projects worth 8.4 million dollars in all, which will contribute to the energy, food and community security of Moldova and will support the approaching of human security challenges in the country. The projects will be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with the financial support of the Japanese government, the communication and protocol department has of the government has reported.    

Thus, in the next year, the project, Multidimensional response to emerging human security challenges in Moldova, for which Japan provides 6.8 million dollars, will help enhance the energy security through the facilitation of the access to energy at accessible prices. Therefore, the households will be helped to set heating systems on biomass, while the present producers of biofuel will be able to access grants. Also, private companies from the agricultural sector and the households with economic activity will be encouraged to adopt energy efficient technologies.     

„Within this project, about 85,000 people will benefit from support, including for setting heating systems on biomass. At the same time, the project will consolidate the capacities of the agricultural producers to enhance the food security and with the implementation of the Farmers’ Register, we will give possibility to carry out more projects for small- and medium-sized farmers, so that we can enhance the efficiency of allocating resources for their development,’’ Prime Minister Dorin Recean.      

According to the PM, another important component of the project deals with the strengthening of the capacity of the police and community actors in enhancing security locally. To back the prompt intervention of the police in crisis situations, including in faraway settlements, well-endowed police vehicles will be provided and the policemen will be equipped with video cameras, in order to detect and document infringements of the public order accordingly.  

The second project, launched today, will contribute to the enhancement of the human security of the Ukrainian refugees, who flee the war of Russia against Ukraine, and of the host community of Moldova. With a budget of 1.64 million dollars, the project will give access of these categories of people to the means of existence and opportunities of employment, including in agriculture and chains of supply with food products, which will help them be financially dependent. At the same time, an inclusive environment, social cohesion, mutual trust and enhanced human security will be promoted.   

„About 1,200 refugees and 40,000 Moldovan citizens, involved in the process of refugees’ accommodation, will receive this assistance. The project is meant to consolidate the capacity of the National Employment Agency, so that we are able to efficiently back the refugees, who need assistance while looking for jobs,’’ the prime minister said.    

Also today, PM Dorin Recean met Director of the UNDP Crisis Bureau Asako Okai, acting Resident Representative of UNDP Andrea Cuzyova and United Nations Resident Representative Simon Springett. The officials discussed the cooperation in the context of the challenges faced by Moldova and the working out of policies focused on people and their needs. Subsequently, PM Dorin Recean, along with Ambassador of Japan to Moldova Yoichiro Yamada and Director of the UNDP Crisis Bureau Asako Okai made press statements.
