Chisinau, March 21. /MOLDPRES/- President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu sent a message to citizens today on International Day of Forests, the presidential press service has reported.
Maia Sandu said that forests prevent soil erosion, the drying up of surface water and reduce carbon emissions. The head of state also said that droughts, which have become longer and more frequent, affect our agriculture and economy and show us how vulnerable we are to the effects of climate change, including the lack of forests.
"Today, on International Day of Forests, I want to remind you about the National Afforestation Programme through which we must stop these negative phenomena. Restoring forest areas will improve the volume of water in rivers, ponds and wells, increase soil fertility and restore the flora and fauna of Moldova. The national afforestation programme will help us become carbon-neutral, and the agricultural sector will also enjoy many benefits", said Maia Sandu.
The president also welcomed the openness of the local public authorities that have allocated land for afforestation so far and encouraged as many town halls as possible to join this initiative. "The forestry authority has already managed to identify 22,677 ha for the establishment of new forest plantations, and more than half of them are on local public authority land. With joint efforts, we can leave a greener country and a more prosperous living environment to future generations", the head of state said.
