Basic social services for elderly people to be set up, extended in 50 settlements of Moldova

Chisinau, 28 June /MOLDPRES/ - Basic social services for elderly people will be created and extended in 50 settlements of Moldova. The goal is included in the national programme on the active and sound ageing for 2023-2027 and the action plan on its implementation, approved by the government today.
Through this programme, the cabinet is set to further develop the social assistance, health, education, culture and sport systems, due to allow turning to good account the potential of active and sound ageing, including through ensuring an inclusive labour market for all ages, development of digital skills and active participation in decision-making processes and community development.
Thus, the authorities are set, in the next years, to provide about 3,000 elderly people with technical assistance devices, to initiative in 50 settlements community services and programmes of mobilizing elderly people, extend the Cultural Voucher programme for 5,000 low-income old people. At the same time, a programme on endowment with digital equipment for 25,000 low-income elderly people will be implemented and opportunities of education during life will be extended through the implementation of the concept, University for the old age.
According to the Labour and Social Protection Ministry (MMPS), the number of people with ages of 60 years and older has grown in the last six years; these people account for about 24 per cent of Moldova’s population. The alert pace of residents’ ageing makes the share of old people increase significantly.
