Chisinau, 4 Aug. /MOLDPRES/- This year, Moldovan producers exported over 16 thousand tons of cherries worth over 22 million dollars. The harvesting season of Moldovan cherries ended with an increase in exports to the European Union market by 12.5 times, compared to 2022.
This year, Moldovan cherries were delivered for the first time to several countries of the European Union, such as Spain, Italy, Belgium, Holland. 163 tons were exported to Great Britain. According to statistics, in 2022, 208 tons of Moldovan cherries were exported to the EU market, and in 2023 the export figure reaches 2600 tons, which represents a 12.5 times increase.
Experts believe that the year 2023 can be considered favorable for producers who wanted to access new markets for cherries. This favorable situation is due to the lack of production from key competitors such as Greece, Spain and Italy. Thanks to this situation, Moldovan producers had the opportunity to satisfy the demand for cherries on the EU market.
In the last five years, the areas of cherry orchards in Moldova have increased from 3,600 to 4,300 hectares. Our country ranks among the top 15 cherry exporting countries worldwide.
