Moldova to have national programme on adaptation to climate changes till 2030

Chisinau, 30 August /MOLDPRES/ - The national programme on adaptation to climate changes till 2030 and an action plan for its implementation were adopted at a today’s cabinet meeting.
The programme was worked out with the support of the project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Promotion of national process of Moldova’s planning and adaptation to the climate changes, financed by the Green Climate Fund.
According to Environment Minister Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov, through the adoption of the programme, Moldova is set to align with the global efforts to limit the negative impact of the climate changes. ‘’The national programme on adaptation to the climate changes till 2030 consists in ensuring the integration of the measures of adaptation in the sectoral policies, in the synergies with the documents of policies in the field of adaptation to the climate changes and in the sector of disaster risks management. The programme was elaborated, in order to enhance the country’s climate resilience. Policies with targeted actions are needed to this end. Therefore, the programme is focused on a string of sectors vulnerable to the climate changes,’’ the official noted.
The national programme on adaptation to climate changes sets the goals aimed at enhancing the climate resilience of six essential sectors: agriculture, health, transport, energy, water and forestry sector and is accompanied by an action plan for the prevention and overcoming of the risks and vulnerabilities triggered by the climate changes.
Moldova is one of the most vulnerable countries of Europe to the climate changes, being predisposed especially to floods and drought. The floods from 2008 alone caused damages worth over 120 million dollars and the droughts which occurred between 2007 and 2012 caused economic losses amounting to more than one billion dollars, hitting 80 per cent of the country’s area.
