Chisinau, 1 September /MOLDPRES/ - The European Parliament’s goal is that the negotiations between Moldova and the European Union start till the end of this year. European lawmaker Siegfried Muresan today made statements to this effect at the 12th meeting of the EU-Moldova Civil Society Platform.
According to Muresan, the European Parliament on this period closely works with the other European institutions on this subject. ‘’Thus, we will use the next weeks, in order to make sure that, if those nine recommendations of reform, submitted by the European Commission this year, are fulfilled by the Moldovan authorities, the European institutions will approve the starting of the negotiations on accession with Moldova till the end of this year,’’ the MEP also said.
Siegfried Muresan noted that Moldova’s European integration process would bring deep changes to the way the public administration would perform and the society would work. ‘’Therefore, the authorities’ cooperation with the civil society, both from Moldova and from the countries of the rest of the Union, such as Romania, will be essential, in order to bring the country closer to the European Union’s standards as quickly as possible,’’ Muresan also said.
On 4 March 2022, Moldova officially submitted the application on accession to the European Union. The Council of the European Union invited the European Commission to give its notification on Moldova’s application, as first step of the European Union in the accession process. On 17 June last year, the European Commission issued the notification on the application on accession, thereby recommending that the EU Council gives Moldova the status of candidate, if measures are undertaken in more sectors.
On 23 June 2022, the European Council recognized Moldova’s European perspective and ruled to give it the status of country candidate for accession to the European Union.
