Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline might be extended

Chisinau, 6 September /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Romania on the carrying out of the projects needed for the interconnection of the natural gas and electric energy networks. The members of the parliament’s commission for foreign policy and European integration today approved the consultative note for starting the negotiations to this end.
The document’s goal is to develop the cooperation in the energy sector, as well as to advance or start the investment projects in the electric energy and natural gas sectors. As a result, the energy security of both Moldova and Romania, as well as of the entire region will be consolidated. Another goal pursued is to diversify the sources and routes of supply with natural gas and electric energy.
The memorandum will contain a string of actions, including considering possibility of extending the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline, through the construction of a new pipeline – Chisinau Belt. This objective might be fulfilled till 2031.
The document also regards the carrying out of projects of strategic importance, such as the Overhead Power Line (OPL) with nominal tension of 400 kV Suceava-Balti, the extension of the Suceava station of 400 kV, as well as the development of the existent interconnection line in the electric energy sector, 110 kV Husi-Cioara.
