Chisinau, 8 September /MOLDPRES/ - The Education and Research Ministry (MEC) this year allocated 17 million lei (850,000 euros) for the renovation and endowment of the student hostels from universities. Another 10 million lei will be earmarked to this end till the end of this year. Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun today unveiled information to this effect.
„As for the student hostels, the situation really needs improvements here. We should recognize that by far not all hostels meet the standards towards which we aspire and additional significant financial investments are necessary for us to manage to solve this problem,’’ the minister said.
Dan Perciun noted that he had visited three hostels at the Ion Creanga Pedagogical University and the situation was not good there. ‘’What I saw does not please me. Urgent investments, endowments are needed. In one of the hostels, I saw furniture which has not been renewed since 1971. Those ten million lei which we will provide with the rectification of the budget in next October will go, as priority, to the State University of Moldova and Ion Creanga Pedagogical University, to the hostels which host future teachers,’’ the official specified.
The minister said that the situation was not uniform in the system, noting that there were hostels which had benefited from significant investments for modernization and endowment in the last years.
With the beginning of the new school year, the students returned to classes and some of them got places of accommodation in student hostels. Thus, more photos have recently appeared in media, showing bad conditions in some hostels. Minister Dan Perciun said the photos had been made in a hostel of the Agrarian University, which had not been maintained during time.
