First president of Moldova passed away

Chisinau, 14 Sep. /MOLDPRES/- First president of the Republic of Moldova Mircea Snegur died on Wednesday evening at the age of 83.
In 1981-1985 he was the first secretary of the Edineț District Committee of the Communist Party. From 1985 until 1989, he served as secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party.
On March 26, 1989, he was elected a deputy in the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, he was a deputy in the Supreme Soviet of RSSM in the 11th and 12th legislatures, a deputy in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in the 14th legislature.
On July 29, 1989, Mircea Snegur was elected president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic and on April 27, 1990, as president of the Supreme Soviet of RSSM. In August 1989, he supported the draft law that gave the Romanian language the right to be the official language and the return to the tricolor flag.
On September 3, 1990, Mircea Snegur was appointed president of RSS Moldova by the Supreme Soviet. Since September 3, 1990, he has served as President of the Republic of Moldova until December 1, 1996.
