Thirteen centres to be set up in Moldova for patients hit by cerebral vascular accidents

Chisinau, 16 October /MOLDPRES/ - Thirteen centres will be set up in Moldova, within which needed assistance will be provided to patients which suffered from cerebral vascular accident (CVA), of which 11 primary centres, one multi-disciplinary centre and one comprehensive centre. Health Minister Ala Nemerenco today made statements to this effect. She presented the new concept of organization of the national medical assistance service in the case of cerebral vascular accidents.      

The primary centres will be created at the Balti-based municipal hospital, at the Holy Trinity municipal hospital from Chisinau, the district hospitals of Edinet, Soroca, Floresti, Orhei, Ungheni, Hancesti, Causeni, Cahul and Comrat. At these centres, patients will have access to a full range of medical services, their state will be assessed quickly and accurately in the first 4-5 hours after the beginning of the CVA symptoms; investigations will be carried out for the confirmation of the diagnosis and the efficient treatment will be provided, including surgical interventions. Also, patients will benefit from rehabilitation services, which are to help them regain the motor and cognitive functions following CVA.     

Besides those 11 primary centres, at a more advanced stage of providing medical assistance, a multi-disciplinary centre will be created at the Diomid Gherman Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery; at the same time, a comprehensive CVA Centre will be set up at the Emergency Medicine Institute. They will ensure the coordination of the emergency medical work of all CVA patients and will serve as reference institutions for the transfer of patients in serious condition.    

At a today’s news conference, Health Minister Ala Nemerenco said the new centres, having the needed endowment, highly qualified staff, infrastructure, experience and programmes, would provide proper ways of diagnosis and treatment for most CVA patients. So far, eight computerized tomographs, advanced ultrasound apparatus and other equipment needed, which will be used at the newly created centres, have been bought.      

„This week, the work of the first two tomographs will be launched in regions, at the Balti-based and Causeni-based hospitals, where the first exercises, practical trainings, verifications, connections with Chisinau will be made, so that we are able to launch these two primary CVA centres. Afterwards, the other centres will come next,’’ Ala Nemerenco said.   

The centres will be activated under an order by the health minister, immediately after their full preparation for taking over patients.  

The cerebral vascular accident is the second reason for death and the principal one for disability in the world. According to statistics, Moldova is among the first ten places in the world as regards the CVA’s incidence and the death rate caused by this disease is by three-four times higher than in the EU states. One third of the patients die in the first year after the beginning of the disease and one third of the people who survive remain with motor or cognitive handicap. Sixty three per cent of the CVA patients from Moldova are at age able for work.  

The Moldovan authorities will initiate a campaign to inform the residents about the CVA symptoms and measures of its prevention. At the same time, the hospitals from Moldova will be connected to tele-medicine services, which will allow medical institutions without local expertise in treating CVA make connection between patients and physicians neurologists specialized in the treatment of a CVA.
