Chisinau, Oct. 18 /MOLDPRES/- The prison term will be increased to 15 years for drunk drivers who have caused fatal accidents. A draft law was examined by the members of the legal commission on rules and immunities.
The draft law set up by a group of MPs of the Action and Solidarity Party aims to establish a mechanism to combat the phenomenon of drunken driving.
The document's authors propose to amend the Criminal Code, so that drunk drivers who caused road accidents or those who left the scene of the accident cannot benefit from a lighter punishment, through release from liability or criminal punishment.
They also propose to supplement the Contravention Code with a provision stipulating that drivers who have been found drunk driving two or more times during the same year, be exempted from the right to pay half of the amount of the offence.
According to statistics, in 2022, 299 road accidents occurred due to the fault of drunk drivers, in which 24 people died.
