Chisinau, 27 October /MOLDPRES/ - The importance of modernizing the student hostels, the lack of informing, transparency and furniture in the public university hostels represents one of the most important problems faced by the students from Moldova. These aspects today were discussed at a news conference held by the League of Students from Bessarabia.
The participants in the event tackled more subjects regarding the students’ discontents with the conditions for education and living: reading rooms, deteriorated furniture, increase in the accommodation fees, insects, mould in hostels, poorly endowed kitchens, limiting of access to hostels after certain hours, etc.
The deputy head of the League of Students from Bessarabia, Nicolae Gherman, emphasized students’ perception as to the rooms and facilities from university hostels. ‘’Seventy three per cent of the students from Moldova said they wanted the hostels to be open overnight or the existence of a permanent schedule. This problem was discussed and partially solved starting with this academic year. Asked if there is a schedule of hot water supply in the hostel, 74 per cent of the students said they did not have this facility. At the same time, 64 per cent of the students say they disagree with the increase of the tariffs for accommodation,’’ Nicolae Gherman said.
In last September, Education Minister Dan Perciun informed that the Education Ministry till late 2023 would allocate another 10 million lei for works of renovation of universities’ hostels. ‘’As for the student hostels, here, the situation really needs improvements. We should recognize that by far not all hostels meet the standards to which we aspire and additional financial investments are necessary to manage to settle this problem,’’ Minister Perciun said at that time.
Twenty one higher education institutions work in Moldova, of which 13 public institutions and 8 private ones. In the Chisinau municipality, there are 17 institutions and one institution in the cities of Balti, Comrat, Cahul and Taraclia each.
