Chisinau, 9 November /MOLDPRES/ - One third of the electric energy consumed by the temporary centre for Ukrainian refugees from the Carpineni village, Hancesti district, is presently generated by its own photovoltaic system, thus bringing significant and sustainable savings. Starting from the present cold season, the institution will cut the expenses for heating by at least 30 per cent, due to a modernized boiler room, which works based on biomass.

This is due to the project titled, Measures of thermal and energy rehabilitation, which brought sustainable transformation at the temporary centre for refugees. The project is implemented with the financial support of the Czech Foreign Affairs Ministry and is coordinated by Green City lab Moldova. The modernization works started in October 2022 and ended in September 2023, with an overall cost of 406,000 euros.

According to the director of the aforementioned centre, Tudor Tenu, the old boiler room, which worked on coal, was in a lamentable state and the costs for heating based on natural gas were excessively high. ‘’With the modernization of the boiler room and switch to biomass, it is estimated that the costs will drop by at least 30 per cent, with perspective to reach even 50 per cent. The centre’s residents will enjoy enhanced thermal comfort, due to the thermal insulation of a hostel, while other improvements included the modernization of the video monitoring system, in order to ensure the security and safety at the centre for refugees,’’ the institution’s manager said.

The boarding-type school for orphan children from Carpineni ceased working in 2021 and in February 2022, it became shelter for over 800 refugees from Ukraine, especially for families with children. The centre hosts 86 people at present.
