General Police Inspectorate informs about new cases of corrupting voters in Moldova

Chisinau, 17 November /MOLDPRES/ - The General Police Inspectorate (IGP) has informed about new cases of corrupting voters. Thus, employees of the Police Department of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia were notified by a woman from the country’s southern region about the fact that financial means had been proposed to her and her sister in exchange for voting for an independent candidate for the mayor office in the runoff election of the general local polls.
According to IGP, one of them received from a man, representative of a political party, an envelope with 50 euros inside. ‘’Following the documentation, policemen established that a man and woman from Comrat had been involved in the illicit activity. Criminal files were opened against them,’’ IGP specified.
At the same time, policemen were notified by a resident from the Comrat city about the fact that, ahead of the first round of the ballot, a woman from the same city had been dealing with the creation of the lists of citizens with residence in the Comrat municipality, whom she was politically agitating to vote for the same candidate. ‘’Food products were promised them in exchange for the votes, and tickets were released for them, with which citizens were able to subsequently receive the concerned products at the headquarters of the candidate,’’ IGP’s communique reads.
In the context, IGP reiterated that the actions of corrupting in elections represent an offence. According to the Article 181, first, of the Criminal Code, the corrupting of voters is punished with fine worth from 37,500 lei (about 1,875 euros) up to 57,500 lei or imprisonment from one to five years, imposed to private person.
The police urge all citizens to express their will by free vote and observe all measures and restrictions established by the normative acts during local elections.
