Information campaign on road traffic security launched in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 2 December /MOLDPRES/ - An information campaign titled, Safe Roads in Moldova 2023-2024, #MAI (Interior Ministry) Safe in Traffic, was launched in Chisinau today. The action’s goal is to raise citizens’ awareness about the observance of the road traffic rules, enhance the responsibility of the participants in the traffic and to prevent the traffic accidents.    

The launch event took place on the area of the car park of the Moldovan Technical University (UTM), with more activities organized to enhance the residents’ awareness as regards the roads traffic security. To show how the rescue actions take place, employees of the institutions subordinated to the Interior Ministry simulated risk situations and showed equipment used in the extrication process. At the same time, visitors were able to see the actions of the simulator of accidents, as well as more simulations of accidents at different speeds. The children who participated in the event received reflective banderols, in order to be easily seen in traffic.      

Attending the event, Interior Minister Adrian Efros said that the traffic safety began from each person, from the friendly and responsible attitude assumed when driving. ‘’This information campaign is meant to remind drivers, as well as pedestrians that the life has priority and this priority can be maintained only through the common assuming of a responsible behavior. The roads can be safe in Moldova, if we together observe the traffic rules and the rules of the common sense,’’ the minister stressed.   

Country Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for Moldova Maha Damaj emphasized that the improvement of the traffic safety would contribute to the development of the physical activities, active travels, their independence and well-being. ‘’We encourage Moldova’s authorities to re-invent the residents’ mobility, through the facilitation and promotion of cycling, use of the public transport and moving by foot. This means more social, economic benefits for all children and their families,’’ Maha Damaj said.   

The campaign was launched by MAI, in partnership with the Education and Research Ministry, State Chancellery, Office of the World Health Organization in Moldova, UNICEF Moldova and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Moldova, along with other partners from the private and state environment.    

According to statistics data, in the first 11 months of this year, 1,810 traffic accidents were recorded, in the wake of which 183 people died and 2,077 were injured. At the same time, since early last November, 141 traffic accidents were registered, in the wake of which 14 people died and 157 were injured.
